There are many traditional Scottish martial arts from history, and some have been preserved in books for us to study today. We teach and practise these Scottish martial arts in Glasgow at the Vanguard Centre on a weekly basis.
Perhaps the most iconic of the Scottish martial arts is fencing with the basket-hilted broadsword, also known as the claymore – this is a term often used to refer to the Scottish two-handed sword, but is more of a Victorian mistake! For more information about this matter of terminology, please see this blog article on What is a “Claymore”?, written by one of our own instructors.
Other Scottish martial arts with written documentation include fighting with the broadsword and targe, working with the musket and bayonet, the regimental military sabre, and the stout wooden quarterstaff.
If any of this interests you, then come along to our Introduction to HEMA class for a fun overview of traditional documented European martial arts, our Scottish broadsword class to delve into the use of the basket-hilted broadsword, or come to our Scottish Fighting Arts class to try out some of the other disciplines from our history. Please see our regular weekly schedule for when the different classes are running.
Send us an email or give us a call if you would like to ask any questions beforehand, or just swing by and speak to the instructor on the night.
