Description

Tea, cake and Broadsword! Ladies: join us for an afternoon to learn some Scottish broadsword.

The Scottish basket-hilted broadsword is an iconic and traditional piece of Scottish history. It saw use in military and civilian life, in wars abroad and at home. Many of the participants in the 1715 and 1745 Jacobite Uprisings would have carried a broadsword and been perfectly comfortable and at home with its use.

Working with 18th century sources, written by fencing masters of the day, we can recreate some of the methods of fighting with the broadsword, the way that it was done.

Would you like to learn how to hold and use a broadsword? Would you like to be supplied with copious quantities of tea and cake while engaging in historical swordplay? Then come to our ladies broadsword day and give it a go!

No prior experience is required. We can provide all the equipment necessary – just come wearing sensible footwear and comfortable, loose-fitting clothing so that you can move around easily. A thin glove for your dominant hand would also be advisable.

The event will run on Sunday the 13th of May from 1pm to 4pm. The venue is the Vanguard Centre, just next to Bridge Street subway station, and within 10 minutes’ walk from Central Station.

Tickets cost ยฃ20 for participation, which entitles you to tea, cake, and broadswords. Spectators tickets cost ยฃ10, which entitles you to tea and cake, and you can watch the lesson from the comfort of our social area.

Places are limited to 14 participants and 6 spectators, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
